Classes

Training at the Northwest Isshinryu dojo begins with a 15-20 minute warm-up, which includes stretching and calisthenics. Following the warm-up are blocks, strikes, kicks, takedowns, rolls & falls, as well as one-on-one and multiple-attacker self-defense and sparring. Traditional empty hand and weapon forms are practiced extensively, as they are the foundation of Isshinryu Karate. Aikido is practiced primarily in the self-defense applications of Te Jutsu; the intent being to effectively defend oneself while causing minimal harm to the attacker yet being able to meet the attacker at their level of intensity.

A primary focus of traditional martial arts training is developing and maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Confidence is gained through becoming stronger mentally and physically, all the while learning and improving movement, balance, self-defense and sparring ability. This growth and increasing capability in the martial arts is tempered with the awareness and practice of humility and respect.

Ages 12 and older are welcome to apply for participation in classes, which are held at the Fruitland Grange on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm.
